Application Deadline – Migration in the European Context: Challenges for Public Health in Greece

March 1

Rutgers School of Public Health, in partnership with the University of West Attica, presents this summer 2024 study abroad program. The course runs from July 6 – 20, 2024, in Athens and Lesvos, Greece, with faculty members from Rutgers and the University of West Attica jointly teaching. The course will address the social, cultural, and public health implications of forced migration in Europe and migrant and refugee health challenges specific to the migration crisis in Greece.

This study abroad program provides a broad spectrum of theoretical knowledge on issues related to migrants’ health and the related policies in a European context.  In addition, it provides an opportunity for students to be in the field and interact with those who provide assistance and health care to newly arrived migrants/refugees in the island of Lesvos, one of the entry points in Greece. Thus, students can build a comprehensive multi-sectorial approach in issues related to migrant/refugee health. Students will visit medical facilities dedicated to migrant and refugee health as well as interact with local experts regarding basic assistance, human trafficking, and grief, among other issues.
