Dr. Ahmed Abdul Azim is a board-certified infectious diseases physician and Associate Professor of Medicine at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He serves as Associate Medical Director of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, which earned the Infectious Diseases Society of America’s Antimicrobial Stewardship Center of Excellence designation in 2025, and holds an adjunct appointment at the Rutgers Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy. He earned his medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and trained in internal medicine at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center before completing an infectious diseases fellowship, with a research track in infection control and hospital epidemiology, at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School. Dr. Abdul Azim’s work centers on antimicrobial and diagnostic stewardship, healthcare epidemiology, and the care of HIV, immunocompromised and transplant patients. His research spans rapid diagnostics in infectious diseases, antimicrobial optimization, and infections in immunocompromised hosts. He contributes to national and international guideline efforts, including service as an advisor to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute, and is a dedicated educator and mentor across the medical school, residency, and fellowship programs.
