Purnima Bhanot is faculty in the Department of Microbiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics at the New Jersey Medical School. Her research program focuses on the malaria parasite, Plasmodium. Malaria causes upwards of half a million deaths a year, mostly in young children in sub-Saharan Africa. The Bhanot lab studies the mechanisms by which the parasite infects the liver from where it launches the disease-causing infection of red blood cells. Our goal is to develop drugs that block the parasite’s development in the liver and prevent malaria.
