The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences is hosting a webinar at 10 a.m. on Friday, October 28, 2022.
“A Conversation with Dr. Cary Fowler, U.S. Special Envoy for Global Food Security” features the leader of the U.S. Department of State’s mission to advance the nation’s food security, global hunger, and nutrition objectives through diplomatic engagement with allies and partners in bilateral, regional, and multilateral fora.
Adapted from the event description: Fowler is critical to the U.S. Department of State’s efforts to respond to the current global food security challenges, guided by the administration’s Global Food Security Strategy 2022–2026 and Global Nutrition Coordination Plan 2021–2026. He also serves as deputy coordinator for diplomacy under the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Feed the Future initiative. Fowler is perhaps best known as the “father” of the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, which UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon described as an “inspirational symbol of peace and food security for the entire humanity.” This facility provides the ultimate security for more than 1 million unique crop varieties, the biological foundation of agriculture, and the raw material for all future plant breeding and crop improvement efforts. Fowler is the former executive director of the Global Crop Diversity Trust, an international organization cosponsored by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN and the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research.
The webinar will be hosted by Xenia Morin, the senior associate dean for learning and the undergraduate program director of the agriculture and food systems program at Rutgers’ School of Environmental and Biological Sciences.
