NEXUS: On Mario Cooper and Black HIV Movement History

February 8, 2021 @ 7:00 pm

CNP, an organization whose mission is to shift narratives about Black gay men to change policy and improve lives, presents a commemorative event honoring the legacy of HIV justice advocate Mario Cooper. Rutgers Global Health Institute director Richard Marlink is among the individuals who will celebrate Cooper’s legacy during a feature presentation that is part of the event.

The New York Times called Cooper a “nexus between AIDS activists and Black leaders,” and CNP describes him as “an incredible force as an advocate and leader in the HIV justice movement.” Marlink and Cooper began collaborating in the 1990s when they and others launched the Leading for Life campaign, which was designed to create awareness that minorities in the United States were disproportionally affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic and that change was needed. This effort was an impetus for continuing work that involved the Congressional Black Caucus and contributed to the Clinton Administration’s allocation of significant funding for AIDS programs for minority communities.

The NEXUS event takes place on what would have been Cooper’s 67th birthday. He died on May 29, 2015.
