Ziad C. Sifri, MD, FACS, is a professor of surgery at Rutgers’ New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) and a trauma and critical care attending at University Hospital, both in Newark, New Jersey. Sifri also is the director of NJMS’ Office of Global Health, Center for Global Surgery, and global surgery fellowship program.

He lectures about global surgery and access to surgical care for first-year medical students in the Health Equity and Social Justice course as well as to third-year surgery clerkship students. He runs the international surgery clinical elective for fourth-year medical students. He also is a faculty mentor for NJMS’ International Surgical Health Initiative (ISHI) student club and the Distinction Program in Global Health.

Sifri organizes and leads several surgical trips per year with ISHI, which is a humanitarian nonprofit organization (501c3) that provides free surgical care to underserved communities internationally through volunteer services. Medical residents and students who want to gain international experience travel and volunteer with him. Sifri has volunteered in Haiti, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Peru, Guatemala, Bangladesh, and the Philippines.

His global surgery research interests include capacity building (RECOVER Program), longterm outcomes of surgical missions, surgical outreach, international teaching (Stop the Bleed), remote teaching, gender equity, and task-sharing/shifting in surgery.
