Umer Hassan’s laboratory is focused on developing biosensing technologies for infectious disease diagnostics and therapeutics applications for global health care settings, aiming to contribute fundamental knowledge and develop breakthrough engineering tools and methods for personalized and predictive health care. He develops devices for infectious disease stratification with a focus on sepsis and tuberculosis. His devices are designed to quantify inflammatory biomarkers including cell counts, cell surface antigens, serum proteins, microRNAs, phagocytic ability, and exosomes. He also studies biological responses of macrophages and neutrophils in response to bacterial infections.

Furthermore, he develops predictive computational systems based on machine-learning techniques to predict the progression of disease, using sensor data and patients’ clinical electronic medical record data to test and validate the system.

His laboratory’s research strategy encompasses the comprehensive clinical translation pathway from biosensor development, characterization, and, finally, its validation in clinical studies locally and globally with a vision to create global health equity. Learn more about Hassan and his work.
