In conjunction with the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies, this two-day summit is presented by the neurosurgery departments at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and New Jersey Medical School and RWJBarnabas Health on November 3–4, 2021.
The summit curriculum is intended to educate, innovate, and update students, residents, and attendings regarding developments in neurosurgery. The program will feature:
Peter W. Carmel Oration
• Jonathan Holloway, Rutgers president
• Topic: structural racism and medicine
David and Lya Neumann Oration
• David M. Oshinsky, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Polio: An American Story and Bellevue
Topics of lectures and talks include:
• How to mentor and train the next generation of technical neurosurgeons – led by physicians Majid Samii and Robert Spetzler
• Leadership – led by Karin Muraszko
• Neurotrauma – led by Franco Servadei
• Global neurosurgery – led by Nelson Oyesiku and Gail Rosseau
• Resident and medical student participation
Summit goals and objectives include:
• To create a platform for societies from the developing countries to discuss the current development of neurosurgery in their respective countries, especially related to the education of young neurosurgeons.
• To create an opportunity for all representatives of members’ countries to present regarding neurosurgical services in their respective countries.
• To understand the facilities and level of development in neurosurgery of each members’ countries.
• To create a database on the regional neurosurgical services used to formulate long-term strategies to improvise the neurosurgical development in human resources, facilities, and adaptation of current modern technologies.
• To understand the regional health policies and its implications on the delivery of care in neurosurgery.
• To understand the challenges posed due to cultural differences in implementing a uniform standard of care globally.

This activity is designed for physicians, surgeons, advanced practice nurses, nurses, physician assistants, residents, fellows, and medical students working in the fields of internal medicine, hospital medicine, neurology, neurosurgery, physical and rehabilitation medicine, and trauma whose practice focuses on the diagnosis, management, and treatment of patients with neurosurgical conditions.
