Shahid Aziz

Professor, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Rutgers School of Dental Medicine

Shahid Aziz is a professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery and plastic and reconstructive surgery at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. His clinical areas of expertise include facial trauma and reconstruction and orthognathic surgery, and he is an attending surgeon at several New Jersey hospitals.

Aziz is the cofounder and president of the New Jersey-based nonprofit organization Smile Bangladesh. A first-generation Bangladeshi American, he has been leading a small team of surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses to Bangladesh since 2006. As of 2019, the team has conducted 24 surgical missions and provided free surgery to about 1,500 children and adults with cleft lip and palate deformities. Aziz also is a visiting professor of surgery at East West University in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

He is a member of numerous professional associations: president, New Jersey Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons; chair, Section of Dentistry and Oral Health, New York Academy of Medicine; diplomat, American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery; fellow, American College of Surgeons; fellow, Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh; and member, Society of University Surgeons.
