Ethan A. Halm, MD, MPH, MBA, is a professor of medicine and the inaugural vice chancellor for population health at Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences. In this role, he aims to advance population health initiatives in research, education, and clinical care across the Rutgers schools of medicine, public health, nursing, pharmacy, health professions, dentistry, and graduate studies and across our affiliated clinical partners. He is also the deputy chief population health officer for RWJBarnabas Health, a 12-hospital regional health care network that is the leading academic health system in New Jersey.

Halm is an experienced clinical and scientific leader, researcher, and mentor. He has 25 years of experience conducting federally funded research in outcomes, health services, comparative effectiveness, applied informatics, and population health and has over 245 peer-reviewed publications. He has been a PI/MPI on over $21 million in grants funding from the National Institutes of Health, Agency for Health Care Research and Quality, and national and state foundations and agencies. His research focuses on: 1) improving cancer screening and chronic disease management; 2) understanding the patient, provider, system, and community factors that influence the quality, outcomes, and equity of care; 3) implementing interventions to improve population health and health equity; and 4) developing clinical prediction models and population health analytics using electronic health record data.

Halm received a BA degree from Wesleyan University, an MD degree from the Yale School of Medicine, an MPH degree from Harvard University, and an MBA degree from the University of Tennessee Haslam College of Business. Following an internal medicine residency at the University of California, San Francisco, he completed a general internal medicine fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital.
